Chrisp Street on Air is a project to record, discuss and celebrate the distinctive character of Chrisp Street Market. It is a project about the local businesses, personal stories and everyday life of this part of East London. The project involved the making and recording of a series of 9 radio podcasts about Chrisp Street and the local area, alongside a series of live events in the market. The Chrisp Street on Air headquarters were a disused shop converted into a temporary recording studio that hosted a series of dinners and public recording and broadcasting sessions to discuss the future of the market.
The visual identity responded to the specific context of Chrisp Street: the market and its players, looking at the vernacular, history and traditions of the place. The identity, developed across signage, website, and printed material, was based on a custom typeface drawn out of the unusual handwriting of Patricia, one of the market traders. A stencil version of the typeface was used for producing signage for the shop and for the events.
Chrisp Street On Air was supported by Tower Hamlets Council and the Mayor of London’s Portas Pilot Programme. A project by The Decorators in collaboration with Tom Keeley, Guglielmo Rossi and Ashley McCormick.
